There hasn't been much to endear the year of 2020 to the population of this planet.

We have lurched from one crisis to the next, with environmental concerns, political upheaval and, of course, the dreaded C-word to contend with.

But there are things to celebrate, and one of them is the outstanding work created by a slew of British companies over the last 12 months. With no APA Show in 2020, nor this year's edition of the shots Awards Europe, there has been an end-of-year vacuum in the advertising plaudits arena.

The Top 20 of 2020 is a testament to the ingenuity of APA members and advertising agencies.

So, shots and the APA worked together to create the Top 20 of 2020, a free-to-enter competition that was open to moving image work of two-minutes or less, created over the last 12 months, and which was worked on by a UK company. Entries streamed in and were viewed and voted on by the APA council members and the shots editorial team. Now, out of 245 entries, the 20 pieces of work with the most votes can be revealed.

“The Top 20 of 2020 is a testament to the ingenuity of APA members and advertising agencies, and of the boldness of advertisers determined to achieve their marketing goals despite the challenges of 2020," said the APA's Chief Executive, Steve Davies. "The UK industry is unique in the way that agencies via the IPA, advertisers via ISBA, and production, editing, VFX, audio post and music companies via the APA, have come together to create structures to enable production throughout Covid to be safe, and to minimise the financial risk to advertisers. We're delighted to partner with shots to create this list, as we both seek to give the success of the industry in creating great commercials through this year's challenges, the tribute it deserves."

Despite testing times the industry was still able to create and produce work that stood out.

"It's been a tough year for many industries, advertising among them, especially in the depths of the first lockdown," said Danny Edwards and Jamie Madge, Co-Editors of shots, "but despite such testing times the industry was still able to create and produce work that stood out. We try to champion examples of such work every day on the shots site, but are so happy to be able to partner with the APA to highlight some of the most creative campaigns produced by UK companies over the last 12 months. Congratulations to all the work that made it onto the list."
