Creating five distinct characters and getting their personalities across clearly is a hard thing to do in any medium, much less in 90 seconds.

Quirky and cute, five friends (all created using stop-motion images of Marla Aaron’s jewelry) get on a video call to discuss their holiday party plans. With adorable papercut details in the background and drawn-on faces, the five personified clasps were drawn by New York-based stop motion artist and illustrator Tai Li Wu, known as Monster Shaper. With ingenious movement and delightful backgrounds, the jokes land and the locks look great.

Holidays merges Marla Aaron’s known rebel style with comedy and humor. The humanized Locks are full of personality and absurdity, and the piece ends with a tongue-in-cheek reference back to the real word. Something Different captured the mood exceptionally well, and it’s the animated details from production co Crew Cuts along with clever copywriting that make this film so full of charm(s).
