Set to Pure Life from Daniel Avery’s acclaimed new album Love + Light, director Greg Barnes has created a snapshot in time for his latest film short, 100 ft of Distance

Using leftover 16mm stock from a cancelled shoot at the start of lockdown, Greg took a unique approach to shooting; capturing daily footage when the “light was right” around his Hackney flat as a “form of creative catharsis”, a personal collection of films and messages from life in lockdown.

Greg used Pure Life, with permission from UK electronic music producer Avery, to accompany the footage before layering the film with personal voicemails from friends and family.

“Daniel’s album Love + Light really spoke to me and seemed to link up with the film I’d been making. When I took the track Pure Life and played it with the footage everything just suddenly clicked, the track itself is even the same duration as one roll of 100ft of 16mm. I sent it to Dan, he liked It, and we’ve decided to put the film out into the world,” Greg Barnes.

Avery, who released Love + Light at the end of June said the album was a “positive force of energy.”

“The initial plan was to do a small release but as each track was finished it became clear that the collection of tracks belonged together on an album. It’s always interesting to hear how music that is so personal enters into the lives of others and Greg’s story connected deeply with me. For a track that was finished in my front room, very much alone, to affect someone else in the same situation just a few roads away in E5 means a lot. I’m proud to have it soundtrack this film.”

Signed to Ridley Scott's Black Dog Films, Greg Barnes has directed videos for the likes of Air's Nicolas Godin, Kamaal Williams, and Poppy Ajudha.
