Production company Independent Films welcomes critically-acclaimed and BAFTA award-winning director Sarah Gavron to its roster for commercials representation.

London-based Gavron first took the world of features by storm with her BAFTA nominated directorial-debut Brick Lane, which also earned her The Alfred Dunhill Talent Award at the London Film Festival.

Gavron went on to direct the vital and powerful film Suffragette featuring stellar cast Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Meryl Streep, Anne-Marie Duff, Brendan Gleeson and Ben Whishaw.

Gavron’s latest film, Rocks, premiered at TIFF 2019 and was released in the UK in 2020 to universal acclaim. The film, centred around a group of east London schoolgirls, is heart-breaking, raw and joyful in equal measures. The story of its production is as compelling and uplifting as the film itself. The cast is populated by teenagers who hadn’t acted before, and the crew was 75 per cent female. From the outset, the film was conceived as a collaborative endeavour between Gavron, the creative team and the young cast.

Prior to Brick Lane, Gavron’s first full length drama, the Dennis Potter Award-winning This Little Life for BBC TV, earnt her the TV BAFTA for Best New Director, Best Newcomer by the Royal Television Society and Women in Film and TV Awards, as well as a nomination for the Douglas Hickox award for Best Debut Director, at the British Independent Film Awards.

Weaving the world around her into intricate stories from an early age, Gavron’s training at the NFTS was the moment she fell in love with life behind a camera and made many short films, which screened internationally and won major awards.

Chris Barrett, Executive Producer at Independent says: “Sarah is one of the most exciting directors working in the industry today. Rocks, absolutely blew us all away and deserves every bit of the universal praise it has received. Like all of her films, it’s a triumph in authenticity and craft over artifice. My heart is racing in anticipation of her bringing that powerful voice to the realm of commercials.”
