As Italy was put on lockdown, Mattia Garavaglia knew he had to adapt to survive.
And thus, The Bicycling Bookseller was born. As Garavaglia put the pedal to the pavement, he found a way to bring hope and resilience to the people of Turin, and the other indie booksellers who were struggling during the pandemic. With Google maps, he was able to navigate the twisting, turning streets and back alleys, delivering more books, and staying connected with his customers. The book-chapter transitions only add to the charm of the piece, making it feel distinct and unique among Google ads.
For Where the Buffalo Roam, the challenges of shooting under restitutions echoed the struggles Garavaglia overcame in 2020. “We all wanted the takeaway of this film to be about hope,” says Director Jonathan Zames. “We love working with Google. They always do a great job of keeping the story about the person, which allowed us to focus on Mattia’s ingenuity and passion for his community.”
