Landmines aren’t an everyday worry for most modern city dwellers, but for millions around the world the explosive devices are a constant and very real danger.
In support of the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), digital agency Critical Mass created an app to demonstrate to New Yorkers just how threatening the problem is across the world as this case video shows.
A multi-sensory experience hinged on and led by the app was carried out that combined visual, audio, physical, mobile and interactive installation elements. The event took place on Friday 4 April (2014) to coincide with the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine.
Using Apple’s iBeacon technology the app provided an audio tour guide and beacons to simulate the experience of walking through a minefield. The exhibition also featured a series of portraits of mine victims by photographer Marco Grob, along with educational materials and donation facilities.
The invitation-only, one-day event was also attended by UNMAS director Agnès Marcaillou, UN Japanese ambassador Kazuyoski Umemoto, and Critical Mass CEO Dianne Wilkins.
