Below we offer some refreshing respite from this year’s festive campaigns by selecting a handful of seasonal sensations from yesteryear.

The Long Wait

John Lewis of course opted for a penguin as the inspiration behind this year’s Monty’s Christmas TV spot but in 2011 it was a young boy who couldn’t wait to give his parents their gift and stole the show in The Long Wait. The campaign came with a touching soundtrack and gained the retailer fans and followers for the original storyline and the ad was shot by Dougal Wilson.

Christmas in a day

This ad announced Sainsbury’s’ arrival as a heavyweight on the Christmas marketing map last year. With a full three-and-a-half-minute film full of amateur footage captured from the previous Christmas the campaign takes us into different UK homes to promote the natural spirit and joy that this time of year brings through AMV BBDO.

Come Together

This campaign from BBH begins with similar antics seen on Black Friday here in the UK but soon the tone changes to see people put their differences aside all in the name of Christmas – and some KFC chicken. With a catchy overbearing musical theme, the film is hinged on the idea that the restaurant’s secret recipe of 11 herbs and spices will bring us all together as an irresistible common ground at Christmas.

Magic & Sparkle

Before the fairies there came a fairy tale campaign which took inspiration from classics such as Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz for Marks & Spencer in 2013. Featuring the acting talents of Rosie Huntington-Whitely, David Gandy and Helena Bonham-Carter the spot is a delightful watch and launched the Magic & Sparkle tagline through RKCR/Y&R.

The Wise Man

This spot from BETC Paris takes a traditional biblical tale and turns it on its head in a togue-in-cheek manner the broadcasting brand, Canal+, has become synonymous with. Watch as our protagonist follows the bright star in the sky to Bethlehem but receives a surprise when he arrives at his destination, all in the name of good entertainment and to advertise the channel’s festive programme.
