How to Cast Donald Trump
Photographer Alison Jackson on what it takes to cast a perfect look-a-like.
Trying to find the right guy or girl to cast in your ad can be tricky. Too tall, too goofy, too ugly, too beautiful... It’s a minefield.
Alison Jackson has it even tougher, because her cast also need to look like famous people. Here’s what we learned when we caught up with the renowned director and photographer...
She was taught how to replicate by her life drawing teacher;
“Every time I drew something reasonably good, my teacher would rub it out and tell me to start again. That way I learnt to replicate something over and over again. It’s not only copying, It’s seeing it in the first instance.”
It’s less about gut instinct and more about what you can get;
“I have to rely on what I see and if there is an angle that I can get. Some people have a resemblance that doesn’t show on camera. I’ll only know I’ve made the right decision when we get them in for a prep day.”
The hair is the key;
“With a wig and an outfit, i’ve done myself as Bin Laden, Monica Lewinsky, Lady Gaga and Madonna. It is particularly important to get the hair right.”
There are very few identical lookalikes in the world;
“Normally people just have a resemblance, so you have to find the right angle. My Kanye West lookalike is good. The Queen is good from very specific angles, and the costume obviously helps.”
Nobody wants to be Donald Trump;
“I work with pretty much all lookalike agencies across the globe, as well as casting directors in New York, Los Angeles and England. Despite this, we failed in finding a Trump lookalike in America or in England. No one Wants to come forward for Donald Trump. People just don’t want to be associated with certain people.”
