Going Native: Los Angeles
Jamee Natella loves whizzing round the city on her Vespa, finding fried chicken, fine views, filmmakers & adfolk.
What is the best thing about working in advertising in Los Angeles?
One time, I went to a pre-pro at an ad agency and came out of the meeting to witness all the executives in their wetsuits holding surfboards walking back to the office! This is why LA is the best place to work because there is always an opportunity to play while you work!
What is the worst thing about working in advertising in Los Angeles?
The traffic. And there is hardly any public transportation! You will often see me roaming on my Vespa trying to get from meeting to meeting in a hurry. Isn’t it funny that the West Coast is all about car accounts?
What advice would you give to a visitor?
Always read all the parking signs and make sure you always have cash on you for a valet.
What do you miss when you are out of the city?
The weather and how catered everything is to the entertainment industry. We have the best crew, studios and on-demand services available 24/7.
What is the best US ad you have seen in the last year?
I’m all about impact and strong messages: Microsoft Make What’s Next, AT&T’s Close to Home and the Under Armour Rule Yourself spots. Although I like the throwback of the M&M’s Candyman spot with Zedd & Aloe Blacc.
Who do you/would you love to work with in the industry?
I can’t single one person out, there are a lot of creative and talented people in this industry. I have been blessed to work with many!
What’s your one-line life philosophy?
“Work hard, play hard and always have fun!”
If booking a hotel in Los Angeles, where would you choose to stay?
In Santa Monica, I would suggest Shutters – a beautiful location right on the beach and you can rent bikes to ride. It’s a holiday vibe, but not too far from the city, so you can work.
If Los Angeles were a product what would it be?
A cellphone. Everyone is always on their phones.
What’s Los Angeles’ favourite pastime?
Seems like everyone is all about a great shot here, whether it’s a selfie, a sunset or a great film shot. Everyone is always on their devices shooting something.
Where’s the best place to eat in Los Angeles?
Craig’s for the best fried chicken you will ever have.
And to have a drink?
Soho House. Beautiful views and a great crowd!
One table, four places. You and who?
Me and my three girlfriends with a nice bottle of Pinot, because we can always use a good night out!
What’s your favourite memory of Los Angeles?
Camping in the mountains. We have beautiful nature and views.
If you could have one question answered, what would it be?
Why can’t we live forever?
