Playlist: Jamie O'Donnell

Jamie O’Donnell’s recent promotion at Cut+Run London follows a progressively busy year for the Australian editor, having cut promos for the likes of Seramic, Jax Jones [bottom], Roisin Murphy [below] and Years & Years.

What’s the best promo you’ve seen recently and why?

First promo that jumps into my head is Jesse Kanda’s Anoche for Arca. So beautiful and effortless.

What’s the first promo you remember being impressed by?

I always remember being glued to the TV whenever I saw Knock on Wood by Amii Stewart. The same goes for Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Was so magical to watch.

And what’s your all-time favourite music video?

Very tough question. Have always loved AG Rojas’ Hey Jane for Spiritualized. Super powerful. I also think Bison’s Vessel promo for Jon Hopkins is so special and beautiful.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspirational?

Always interested when a new Romain Gavras promo is released. Also really love Matt Lambert’s direction.

What are you listening to at the moment?

I’m revisiting Björk’s Homogenic. Had recently read that it was 20 years old and hadn’t listened to it in an age. It’s such a beautiful album.

What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

The Wacom [below]. Just love it.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?

Perfume Genius.  I love his music and visual aesthetic.

How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?

I feel that budgets have gotten tighter and time frames shortened.

Music videos have had a resurgence of late; where do you see the industry being in five years’ time?

It is an ever-evolving beast and impossible to even guess where it will be in the next 6 months, but I do imagine there will be a lot more artist directed promos.

I hate spiders.
