Sexual harassment allegations in Hollywood have dominated the headlines for the past few months, so it's no surprise the long shadow of the #MeToo movement fell across last night's Golden Globes awards.
In addition to the red carpet 'blackout' - where many of the female attendees eschewed brightly coloured gowns for sombre shades in support of the cause - screens were dominated during the ad break by the New York Times' latest commercial, which summed up in stark black-and-white how women's voices are finally coming to the fore.
Created by Droga5 New York, the minimalist 30-second spot opens with the words "He said" followed by "She said", an exchange which repeats several times before multiple "She said"s proliferate across the screen. It closes with the endline: "The truth has power. The truth will not be threatened. The truth has a voice."
A sequel to The Truth is Hard to Find [below], which aired in February 2017 at the Academy Awards and picked up a gold Lion at Cannes, the latest campaign includes print as well as digital elements focusing on real New York Times stories.
Showcasing the spot at a prominent film awards is a fitting move for the publication, given that it was the New York Times which first broke the story last year of the multiple allegations against heavyweight producer Harvey Weinstein, and has since been the driving force in exposing a wider culture of sexual harassment in Hollywood and beyond.
