Financial advertising is often full of jargon, but Mackenzie Investments is taking a different approach with its latest campaign, its first major investment in video production.

Led by Toronto-based independent agency The Garden and directed by Holiday FilmsAdam Reid, the spot brings a fresh, visually engaging take on the world of investing.

Set in an art gallery, the story follows Wendy, an “Over-Seer” who effortlessly cuts through the noise. As other characters, including an “Over-Thinker” and an “Over-Sharer” overanalyse a painting, Wendy steps forward, delivering her verdict: the painting is fake. And, as she points out, it’s crooked.

“Unlike competitors in the space, we wanted to cut through the clutter of jargon and break free from the sea of sameness, entertaining people with a simple human story, the value of seeing things others miss,” says Lindsay Eady, executive creative director at The Garden.

The concept blends humor with a sharp insight, culminating in a tagline that ties seamlessly to Mackenzie Investments’ brand positioning: See things others miss.

“A narrator, quirky archetypal characters, a timely lesson, it felt like a fable to me, so that’s what we set out to make,” says Reid, who directed and edited both English and French versions of the spot. “The story is both larger-than-life and grounded in reality, and I wanted to give it a visual energy that you don’t often see in financial spots.”

Reid’s direction, combined with The Garden’s creative vision, infuses the spot with vibrant colours, playful characters, and dynamic camerawork, all while reinforcing a message about sound investing. The edit, completed by Recess Post (part of Holiday United Group), maintains a balance between charm, sophistication, and elegance, qualities designed to resonate with Mackenzie Investments’ B2B audience.

“Adam did a wonderful job of adding charm and personality to the spot while maintaining a sophisticated and elegant feel,” adds Eady.
