Raw, honest and refreshingly original, this captivating seven-minute-long music video, directed by Otis Dominique through Kode Media for British music artist Raye, takes us on a dynamic three-part journey from the dark depths of the artist’s struggles with her mental health to a place of positivity.
Titled Genesis, the track is clearly divided into three parts, with the visual concepts clearly developing to match the tone and themes of each section. Opening as a spoken word poem and evolving into a song, the first act places the artist in a dimly-lit room as her words appears on screen.
We are soon thrown into a dynamic sequence of emotionally-charged performances spliced with artistic shots and special effects, as her lyrics touch on a plethora of issues from body image to substance abuse.
Finally, as the song progresses to the third and final part, the video ends on a more, light, positive and healing note, as Raye sings, surrounded by others, at nursing homes, primary schools and at a train station, emphasising the importance of community, human connection and uplifting others.
