In this delightfully DIY music video from Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, a group get on a Zoom call for a long-distance dance off

As Thao brings her computer screen up, dancers call in and out, creating a rotating cast of interactive views. The world shrinks and expands to just the computer screen, and the effects that the team manages to create are intricate, clever, and fun to watch. Phenom itself is a nice break from the typical low-quality zoom advert we’re inundated with, and this bright, poppy, and skillful promo shows off what can be done with a little bit of tech and a lot of planning.

The music video is so good that it just goes to show that creativity doesn’t have to be limited because of the limitations on production. The accessibility of zoom and the way that Directors Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux and Erin Murray have utilized minimal design, small, fast edits, and a tight production schedule show that creativity can thrive under restriction, and come from anywhere. With agility and a lot of hard work, the team behind Phenom created something upbeat and beautiful.
