We've probably all taken part in the sort of marathon where we sit around in our pants and watch an entire series of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Twin Peaks, or your more modern TV show of choice. Fewer of us, however, have taken part in the exhausting slog that is a real marathon (and I'm not just talking about season 2 of Twin Peaks...). And even few of us have done the former at the same time as doing the latter.
However, that is what M&C Saatchi Milan got a series of long-distance-running, Game of Thrones-loving fans to do for The Marathon, a stunt that the agency ran in the lead-up to season seven of the swords-and-shagging series.
Taking place across Italy, The Marathon saw runners following a van playing through all 60 episodes of the show up to date, with the runners running through the Red Wedding and fighting joggers' nipple whilst following Jon Snow.
The intrepid group where then rewarded by a screening of the first episode of season seven in Milan's Sforzesco Castle at the same time as the show was premiering in the USA.
M&C Saatchi Milan executive creative directors and partners Luca Scotto di Carlo and Vincenzo Gasbarro said of the campaign, “we were thrilled to be involved in the biggest TV series of all time and were excited when Sky allowed us to push the boundaries for this campaign and create something unique. There has never been a marathon like this: winter is finally here, and this is how far it brought the fans.”
