Starring a very plucky water bottle, Querido Lixo is a delightful PSA that proves the value of community recycling.

When a forlorn bottle gets discarded amid the celebrations of Carnival, they’re left in the gutter, wondering what will happen to them. Eventually, they get picked up and taken to a recycling plant, where they’re transformed into a drop-box as a part of a sustainability program. Wonderfully animated, with intricate textures and nuanced detail, Querido Lixo takes on the task of reusability in its creation.

Produced using traditional, practical stop-motion animation, the characters, set pieces, and many other elements were created out of waste material. The grass, trees, leaves, and even streets are plastic or paper, each one painstakingly hand-crafted. And later, it was all recycled into a trash can after the short was finished, a real message in the making. The fully recyclable campaign was created by SunsetDDB and produced by Zombie Studio and directed by Paulo Garcia.

“Transforming garbage for the benefit of the population is something grandiose. The architectural model of the short film could not have any destination other than recycling. The film delivers two things—something creative that inspires, and a practical aspect in following the action and turning the set into a trash can. It took 868 hours of work, 65 professionals involved, and many reference studies to reach stop motion,” explains Garcia, a partner at Zombie Studio.
