Ahead of Press Freedom Day on May 3rd, a new short film from Article 19 highlights the violence perpetrated towards journalists in parts of Mexico.

The Last Trip, created by Grey México and directed by Yupi Segura through Oriental Films Uruguay, is a four minute film that demands justice for the murder of journalist Moisés Sánchez.

The film recounts the last days of Sánchez's life as a taxi driver, and takes an unexpected turn when it's revealed that his disappearance and murder was because he was also a journalist, working as a taxi driver only to help pay for his journalism. Sánchez was Editorial Director of Diario La Unión, reporting on the irregularities he found in local government, and is one of many murdered and still-missing reporters from the region.

Article 19 is an independent organisation that promotes and defends freedom of expression and access to information for all, with this new campaign aiming to put pressure on the authorities by demanding justice for Sánchez, and for the hundreds of journalists murdered in Mexico, and to prevent future cases like this from going unpunished.

“It is a story inspired by injustice," said Alexis Ospina, Chief Creative Officer of Grey México. "We wanted to tell the truth, exaggerating the lie that the authorities created. We hope that the campaign helps to continue the investigations into the Moisés Sanchéz case, and that justice is done."

From the year 2000 to today, more than 163 murdered journalists have been documented, placing Mexico as one of the most dangerous countries in the world to practice journalism.

“We live in a society that has little empathy for the pain and silence caused by the murder of a journalist," added Jorge Sánchez, the son of Moisés Sánchez. "Although we thought the fight was lost, several families of murdered journalists decided to organise and demand that the authorities do their job.”

Article 19 is inviting people to join the fight by signing a petition in a bid to find justice for Sánchez and his fellow journalists.
