After a year-long break, Homespun is bringing back its acclaimed short film competition, Yarns, a platform dedicated to discovering and nurturing the UK’s best unsigned filmmaking talent.

In association with Kodak, the APA and Sine Audio Post, Yarns offers emerging directors a unique opportunity to transform their ideas into professional short films, with support from some of the industry’s leading creatives. Over the years, the competition has helped launch the careers of countless filmmakers, and now, it returns with one of its most thought-provoking briefs yet.

The Brief: Disinfo

This year’s Yarns winner will receive £1,000,000 in gold bullion and the keys to a secret underground film studio. Okay, maybe not, but disinformation shapes the way we see the world, and that’s exactly what this year’s Yarns filmmakers will be tackling.

The lines between real and fake, true and false, “right” and "wrong”, have rarely seemed so blurred. Election interference. Scams. AI. Deep fakes. False reporting. Yarns is calling on unsigned filmmakers to react creatively to the new abnormal and come up with a short film idea based on the theme of disinformation—whether through fiction, documentary, satire, or even an experimental piece that plays with disinformation itself. All entries must be original and up to five minutes long.

Leo King, Editor and Owner of Stitch and Homespun, comments:
"We’re so excited to bring Yarns back for 2025. The competition has always been about giving emerging filmmakers a chance to bring their ideas to life, this year’s theme couldn’t be more relevant. We can’t wait to see how the entrants interpret the brief, whether it’s thrilling, hilarious, thought-provoking, or completely unexpected!"

An Industry-Backed Filmmaking Experience

Yarns is more than just a competition, it’s an opportunity for new talent to experience every stage of filmmaking, from concept development to final edit and premiere. Three selected filmmakers will be selected and given £2,000 in funding, along with full post-production support from Homespun and its partners.

Unlike previous years, Yarns will not be crowning a single winner, championing the success of all three films. The selected filmmakers will have their films screened at Curzon Soho, celebrating their work on the big screen in front of industry professionals and film lovers alike.

How to Enter

Filmmakers have until 11:59pm on May 2nd to submit their idea in the form of a script, storyboard, or treatment.

The selected filmmakers will be announced in June, following in-house judging by the Yarns team. Their completed films will be premiered at Curzon Soho on November 13th, giving them a platform to showcase their talent in one of London’s most iconic cinemas.
