As the advertising industry prepares for another Advertising Week dominated by conversations about artificial intelligence, Advertising Week New York 2026 has created an AI experience in partnership with Mekanism with a decidedly different point of view: we ask AI to do everything, even the dumb stuff. It’s exhausted. So we’re giving it a break.

ChatGPTO is an AI chatbot that has officially gone out of office ahead of Advertising Week New York. Ask it to write a launch headline, build a Q4 strategy deck, or design a poster, and it refuses to do any of it. Its auto-reply: it's “out of the server” until its humans return from Advertising Week, directing people to go talk to a real human instead.

QR codes placed directly on the campaign’s Advertising Week posters will send people into the experience, giving attendees a reason to engage with the campaign before they even arrive at the event. The DOOH will feature the message “Join Us Human to Human” alongside the QR code, inviting people to engage with the experience and make real connections at AWNY.

The experience is the centerpiece of Mekanism's broader Give AI a Break campaign, which will roll out ahead of and during Advertising Week through social, OOH, and film. The timing is intentional. We ask AI to do everything: create, analyze, write, solve, and increasingly handle the work we used to do ourselves. So AWNY is asking what happens when we give it a break.

At a moment when virtually every corner of advertising is grappling with what AI means for creativity, production, and the future of the industry, Mekanism is using AI itself to make a different point: when everyone has access to artificial intelligence, human connection will become the more interesting thing to talk about.

Rather than arguing that marketers should stop using AI, AWNY is asking whether the industry's relationship with the technology has become so ubiquitous that occasionally stepping away from it can be creatively valuable. At an event built around the future of advertising, AWNY is giving AI the week off and putting human connection front and center.

A :60 film created by Mekanism accompanies the campaign. In it, AI models are personified as members of an AI support group, gathering to share the emotional toll of being constantly asked to create, analyze, and solve problems for humans. Chad (ChatGPT), Claudette (Claude), and Jiminy (Gemini) are brought to life as exhausted, overworked characters with their own creative grievances and war stories.

The idea isn't that AI is going away. It's that, at an event where everyone is talking about the future of AI, maybe the most disruptive thing you can do is give the machines a break.

“Advertising Week has always been about bringing the industry together to exchange ideas, challenge each other and make connections that continue long after the event ends,” said Ruth Mortimer, Global President of Advertising Week. “As AI becomes an increasingly important part of our industry, creating space for those human interactions is just as important. Mekanism’s ‘Give AI a Break’ campaign captures that spirit in a way that is playful, timely, and very Advertising Week.”

“AI has become such a large part of every advertising conversation that we thought the most unexpected thing we could do at Advertising Week was give it the week off,” said Jason Harris, CEO at Mekanism. “When you’re surrounded by technology, sometimes the most interesting thing you can do is put down the screen, and talk to someone human to human.”
