Favourite Tech: Brian Bernard
Brian Bernard, Audio Director and Engineer at Grayson Music Toronto, picks the technological gadgets and Android apps that have the most impact on his life.
Soundbowl
I’m very much a proponent of mindfulness and wellness. As an audio engineer, this is especially fun for me because I get to geek out on sound and music, be creative and connect to a deeper part of me.

When I get a chance to share the gift of sound, I love when a listener shares their experience with me because each experience is so unique to that individual. It’s very special.
DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm Headphones
Wearing these headphones is so comfortable. They are my go-tos for every scenario, whether I need them for mixing long sessions, recording or just listening back to pretty much anything. I don’t get ear fatigue, and they have great acoustic frequency range and balance. The replaceable velvet cups and strap are a nice touch too.
TLM 103 Microphone
These high-end mics make my voice sound nice, crisp and velvety. It gives me a lot of flexibility whether I’m recording a voiceover for a commercial, audiobook or a guided sound meditation.
Kobo Clara HD
This is the perfect e-reader. I love the e-ink display. It fits perfectly in my pocket, and into one hand. I can carry hundreds of books with me anywhere I go. I can also borrow books from the library for free with it.
It’s definitely worth the trade-off of carrying a physical book.
I also love that it is a dedicated device, free from all notifications and distractions. It’s helpful on the eyes and doesn’t have any blue light you would get from a phone. It’s definitely worth the trade-off of carrying a physical book.
Insight Timer app
It’s a great meditation app similar to Calm and Headspace, but I find it way more community driven, which I love. I can interact with the community who listen to the soundbaths and guided meditations I share. I appreciate its simplicity and its nice UI design.
OLauncher app
This is great for helping to turn my Android phone into a more minimalist phone.
It’s a nice in-between if you don’t want to go the full minimalist route.
There are no app icons, only text for your app drawer, and I’ve customised it to be less distracting. It’s a nice in-between if you don’t want to go the full minimalist route.
Xbox Controller
This helps me get lost in a video game for a moment after a long, hard-working day. I’ve seen studies recently about the benefits of playing videogames. It’s definitely a great stress reliever.
