For a while, Arthur Studholme made very serious films.
You know the kind, photographing the moon every night to create a stop-motion rumination on its lunar cycle. Until a bad hangover and a box set of Chris Morris’ Brass Eye led to an epiphany; he could apply that kind of craft and artistic sincerity to comedic concepts that are unapologetically stupid.
The proud owner of a pet corn snake named Colin Poppshed, Arthur has committed to the joy of nonsense ever since. He now makes very silly films that combine the extraordinarily ridiculous with the extraordinarily clever. “It’s a given that the idea has to be really bloody good. But even a great idea can be squandered if not given the right tonal world. That’s what really gets me out of bed - building an irreverent world that surprises the audience, tailor-made to the idea.”
It’s a sentiment that’s seen Studholme win Gold at YDA, and direct work for the likes of Adult Swim, Channel 4 UK, Old Spice, Gumtree, TPG, Jack Link’s and most recently, Suntory-196.
On signing the latest talent from across the pond, FINCH Managing Director and EP Corey Esse had this to say: “Arthur and I first met at the cricket watching the Ashes, now that the Ashes are on again, it is the perfect time for him to be back in Australia, first person to give us a job after this announcement can come to the cricket with us.”
Rumour has it he’s on the list to write the British SNL spin-off, but here’s hoping he doesn’t make the cut because we absolutely love working with him.
