What's the best music video you've seen recently and why?

These have stuck with me, though not brand new. ISTA - Low Fruit, directed by James Kerr, sardonic Renaissance-Bosch social commentary on our digital obsessions and a sly reminder of my own continuing brain rot.

Rosalía - Berghain, a moment for us Western art-music nerds to say don't count us out! In her album and shows, she puts those genres centre stage, celebrating human-made artistry.

The gorgeous chiaroscuro of Little Simz - Flood by Salomon Ligthelm and the witty, artful surrealism in Tyler, the Creator's Sugar On My Tongue. Lastly, Kneecap and Paul Hartnoll - Sayōnara, for when it's been a bloody long week and you lost the bid for that job.

What's the first music video you remember being impressed by?

Tough! Not the first, but these are two very memorable life timestamps: Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit and Madonna - Like A Prayer.

And what's your all-time favourite music video?

I have to mention two.

Missy Elliott - Lose Control directed by Dave Meyers, is frenetic, kinetic, a definite WTF moment. Hadn't seen anything like it when it came out.

I'm not a dancer but grew up surrounded by dance, so the first time I became aware of (LA)HORDE's mesmerising work was through Rone - Room with a View, wow.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?

Jafar Panahi: bravery beyond anything I can imagine.

Mira Nair for her portrayals of the Indian immigrant experience, a subject close to home.

Jonathan Glazer, whose subtly brutal sound design in "The Zone of Interest" still haunts me.

What are you listening to at the moment?

The Cramps' lost album Gravest Gravy: early recordings, raw and so distinctive. Score study of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet for a concert I'm playing in November. I get tired of making decisions, so radio rules. NTS always surprises: pick a live stream and see what ear-opening sounds turn up.

What's your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?

Professionally: Supreme Tools, our in-house tech. And my dearly beloved iPhone, ha! Personal tech? My violin. Analogue, handmade from dozens of pieces of wood held together with tension and glue. A technical marvel with years of history, imprinted by musicians and performances that came before me.

Where do you see the music video industry being in five years' time?

I truly don't know. I'm betting on people: they'll keep making singular, strange, personal work with whatever tools are at hand, cutting-edge or centuries old.

Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won't know.

I wanted to be a cartoonist.
