Playlist: Tash Hicks
We hear from Coffee & TV London colourist Tash Hicks, where she talks about her camera collection, the allure of the grading suite, and some cinematic videos.
What’s the best music video you’ve seen recently and why?
Honestly it’s probably still Sam Fender - Get You Down, directed by Hector Dockrill. I love the focus on the story. His videos are always shot beautifully and they encapsulate a narrative that suits the song, very cinematic.

What’s the first music video you remember being impressed by?
Like all millennials I grew up obsessed with MTV. The production values of 90s music videos was so intriguing and I fell in love with so many genres of music from watching those.
Some of my faves include Jamiroquai - Virtual Insanity, Blu Cantrell – Breathe and Britney Spears - ...Baby One More Time.

What other directors/artists do you look to for inspiration?
I don’t have to look far for inspiration because the team at Coffee & TV are always working on amazing things.
In terms of external inspiration, my creative drive comes from all creative avenues - literature, photography, music, nature.
What are you listening to at the moment?
I love Sault, Phoebe Bridgers, Last Dinner Party, Taylor Swift, Sam Fender, the list goes on. The Wicked soundtrack gets a special mention too!
What’s your favourite bit of tech, whether for professional or personal use?
As a colourist you’re working with amazing tech every day just to do your job. I love walking around the studio and seeing the CG and VFX teams working as well. On a personal level I have dozens of cameras, both analog and digital, which will always fascinate me.

What artist(s) would you most like to work with and why?
Any of the greats would be amazing. I loved The Rolling Stones – Angry video from last year directed by Francois Rousselet. Anyone I watched on MTV as a kid would be a bonus.
How do you feel the promo industry has changed since you started in it?
I think there’s been a new interest in it with the rise of social media. There seems to be a new space for it online which is really cool. It’s a great way for creatives to test new ideas.

Where do you see the music video industry being in five years’ time?
I think there will be even more space for visual albums and one-off performances with higher production values. Hopefully creating more space and more work.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people won’t know…
I’m a pretty open book so this is a hard question! Maybe that I was planning to pursue editing until I walked into a grade suite for the first time, from that point I never looked back.
