Following a triumphant night that saw the Brazilian drama I'm Still Here win an Oscar for Best International Feature film – the first for the South American country – this poetic film amplifies the connection between Brazil's rising global cinematic presence and its vibrant culture.
Titled Brasil em Cena, it was created for Apple by TBWA/Media Arts Lab/Sao Paulo, directed by Mariana Borga, through Prodigo Films, and was released to coincide with Carnival and the Academy Awards broadcast.
Set in a transformed warehouse, the film features an original samba song composed by Jair Oliveira – the son of legendary Jair Rodrigues – and performed by Nilze Carvalho, a powerhouse in the Brazilian samba scene.
Oliveira’s composition for Brasil em Cena conflates Brazilian cinema and Carnival traditions through such charming lyrics as, "Our cinema has become Carnival, red carpet with samba in its steps."
Walter Salles’ film I'm Still Here also received nominations in two other major Oscar categories: Best Picture and Best Actress.
