Comedy writer and director Andrew DeYoung has signed with Outsider, his first major representation in the UK commercials market.
DeYoung has established himself as one of the most prominent and cutting edge writers in the game with his surreal, off beat comedy and his work alongside Tim Robinson capturing the world's attention.
He has written and directed on the much revered Hulu series PEN 15 as well as Shrill, starring Aidy Bryant. On top of this DeYoung has cut his teeth on renowned series like Dave, High Fidelity, Miracle Workers, and Baby-Sitters Club to name a few, not to mention working alongside Taiki Waititi on HBO Max’s Our Flag Means Death, directing multiple episodes on the comedy series set in 1348 during the Black Death.
More recently however, DeYoung truly announced himself to the world with his A24 feature film debut Friendship, starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, in a twisted tale about male loneliness and the sacred, fragile bonds of (you guessed it) friendship. It was released to rave reviews with critics going as far as to call it "one of the funniest things I've ever seen in my entire life."
Following on from Friendship, DeYoung and Tim Robinson delivered the goods again showcasing their distinctive and brilliantly cringey and uncomfortable comedy in HBO’s The Chair Company. Much like with Friendship, The Chair Company was lauded as one of the funniest and most daring shows of recent times to truly establish DeYoung as one of the most important voices in the comedy circuit.
Otis Denison, Executive Producer at Outsider, is over the moon to have him on board. “I have been a massive fan of Andrew’s for quite some time and I had been chasing him for a chat or even just a hello for months and months. When he finally responded I felt like I’d already won, that was enough. But then when he put his faith in myself and Outsider it really was the greatest feeling. His work is bold, it’s unusual, it’s distinctive and it’s utterly brilliant. I saw Friendship on my own for the earliest screening I could find at my local cinema the day it came out and once it finished I messaged as many people as I could to tell them they had to go and see it. Immediately. Alongside The Chair Company Andrew has shown us all what a refreshing energy he is and what a force he will continue to be in comedy. I cannot wait to start this journey in the UK with him and bring his surreal and uncomfortable storytelling to the commercials fray. Absolutely buzzing for this one.”
Unlike Otis, DeYoung kept it short and sweet. “I'm thrilled to join the lovely people of Outsider to help me finally achieve the dream of selling out internationally."
DeYoung is represented by Outsider in the UK and Amsterdam.
