Balancing Texan roots with Nashville life, 77 Ventures ECD Doug Hanshaw fills his workspace with an assortment of Americana.

A creative director whose work spans Amazon Prime’s NBA launch alongside campaigns for NASCAR, ESPN, United Airlines, Google, Walmart and more, he has gone from couch-surfing art student to leading major brand stories.

Here he shares the bookshelf, baseball cards and battered Yashica that keep him inspired.

The Bookshelf

When I walk into my office, the first thing I want to feel is a sense of warmth and calm.

Cue the giant IKEA bookshelf that almost every person owns.

I’ve always loved the feeling that books and knick-knacks give to a space (no minimalism here!).

Pretty much anyone who walks into this room knows a couple of things about me right away.

One, I’m from Texas.

Two, I like baseball and music.

And three, I want some cosy ass vibes.

The Yashica-D

This was my dad’s camera when he was in school.

For a good stretch of years, I carried this around with me everywhere (and it is NOT light or compact by any means).

It’s not even a “great” camera like a Hasselblad or a Rollei, but I learned a ton about shooting on film and have a good collection of prints from it sprinkled around my home and office.

The Charlotte Motor Speedway Photo

This is one of those pictures I took with my Yashica on my first job with NASCAR at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

It was my first time working with a big-name director, Mark Romanek, and I remember being really self-conscious using this beat-up old camera around him for some reason.

Imposter syndrome?

Well, I’m glad I kept shooting.

To this day, I can’t see those seats and not know exactly which track it is.

The Taxi Sign

This sign is from one of my favourite spots I’ve done in my career for United Airlines.

It was hand-painted on site in India for a scene with a tuk-tuk driver.

Their art department was about 20 locals just vying for any piece of work, which they did quite well.

Got to rep the hometown of Nashville with a hat in the background as well.

And the photo above it?

Yup, also from the Yashica camera, taken in Grand Central.

The Dennis Eckersley Baseball Card

Just because I’m a homer for my favourite team, the Houston Astros, doesn’t mean I can’t spread the love to some of the baseball stars I grew up with.

I still have my old cards and now I use them as bookmarks, as you can see with the fine Mr Eckersley.

The Nightwatch Magazine

There is this amazing comic store in Brooklyn called Desert Island that sells these graphic books called Nightwatch, amongst many other things.

They’re full of all the weird, sicko, underground styles I love (thanks MAD Magazine!) and tap into my lizard brain when I need a break from the digital world.

The Popo Photograph

On the left, there is a picture of my maternal grandpa, Popo, feeding a cow a Pearl beer during a cattle show in Victoria, Texas.

My dad made the frame for it and gave them out to the family one year for Christmas.

That cow worked hard, it may as well enjoy a bit of ill-advised refreshment.

The Records

I started to collect records before I even had a record player back in high school.

There was, and still is, a store called Half Priced Books that sold a bunch of used vinyl before it had its resurgence, for insanely cheap prices (lucky me!).

Pretty sure I was able to pick up the entire Billy Joel catalogue for about four dollars.

I thought this Russian pressing of the Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed was so interesting because they didn’t just translate the words, they illustrated all the original artwork as well.
