Sophie Jones: A Few Of My Favourite Things
The Somesuch director/photographer talks to us about the captured memories that fuel her creativity.
With an undeniable flair for capturing moments for posterity, we could safely assume that Sophie Jones' selection of favourite things would come with emotional connections.
In our look through the creative drivers of the Somesuch director/photographer, who has worked with brands including adidas Originals, Versace Jeans, Louis Vuitton and Off White, as well as projects for publications including Dazed, The Face and Altered States, we see that each comes with its own snapshot of the moment.
The Contax
This Contax T2 was my first step into film photography.
I bought it in New York in 2015.
It came with me to Thailand one year, where I tragically dropped it into a pool.
It’s unusable now, but it holds a lot of sentimental value.
It reminds me of where my journey with film began.
The Photo Book
Bruce Davidson’s The Subway is a book I’m obsessed with.
It’s in constant rotation in my collection.
There’s something about the raw spontaneity and energy of those photos - they capture a side of New York in the ’80s that we’ll never see again.
I go back to it whenever I’m looking for inspiration or to reconnect with that kind of bold storytelling.
The Razor Blade
This razor blade has a lot of history.
It’s from Liverpool, where my family are from - a gift from my grandparents to my mum for her 21st birthday, in the '80s.
I borrowed it from my mum at 14 and became attached to it.
It’s been with me ever since.
I thought I lost it last year, and honestly, it felt like a sign.
The day I had to make a big life decision, it fell out of my pocket.
I’ve always believed it’s blessed.
The Goldie Poly Board
Shooting with Goldie was every bit as chaotic and brilliant as you’d imagine.
He spray-painted this poly board during the shoot.
It’s become a memento I’ll probably hold on to.
The Erykah Badu Image
This was a pivotal moment for me.
It was taken six or seven years ago for I-D Magazine.
We were backstage, and I managed to get a bit of time with her.
Her security guard even held up some lighting for me when he noticed I needed an extra hand.
I’ll never forget how Erykah Badu told me she tastes like cranberry juice and smells like freshly cut grass.
I was young and still finding my footing, so meeting her was surreal.
She was a huge part of my youth.
The Brazil Print
These are handprints from my upcoming project - a book documenting my trips to Brazil.
It will also be my first solo exhibition.
After feeling disconnected from London post-COVID, Brazil’s liberal, vibrant energy completely drew me in.
It’s a love letter to the culture, the people, and the places that reignited something in me.
I can’t wait to share it.
The Magazine Cover
This was my first cover for Altered States Magazine.
Amidat Giwa reached out to me to shoot her beauty story at Carnival.
It was such a wild shoot - we casted a group of girls and headed to Carnival, changing looks at the different sound systems.
We shot over two days, it was hectic, fun and high energy.
Everything I love.
The Compton Cowboys
In 2019, I got a DM back from the Compton Cowboys on my last day in LA, inviting me to visit their ranch in Compton.
No one had documented them in a way that felt truly authentic to their community.
Most portrayals had placed them in a fashion context, but they wanted to show me what their nighttime world was really like.
That evening, they gathered their trucks, horses, and sound system, and took to the street.
It was a community gathering, and I had the privilege of documenting it.
I worked on this project in collaboration with Trippin, and this print was gifted by them.
