Underhill welcome director Perry Gershkow to its growing roster of filmmakers.
Built on years chasing waves, landscapes and stories around the world, Gershkow’s work is defined by movement, adventure and a sharp visual instinct. With a natural home in automotive, outdoor sport and lifestyle, he pairs striking imagery with an ability to capture the spontaneous, human moments that give his films their energy.
Before moving deeper into commercial directing, Gershkow spent years as a professional surf filmmaker, traveling the world and documenting the sport in some of its most dynamic and unpredictable environments. It became a proving ground for his filmmaking, learning to anticipate action, adapt when conditions change and find compelling images in moments that can’t be repeated.
That same instinct has carried into his commercial and documentary work. Gershkow points to his recent films for Hamilton and his award-winning documentaries as particular highlights, but it’s often the challenge behind the work that excites him most.
“Some of my biggest moments as a director have been when the odds and challenges were stacked against me, and I was able to push through and find creative solutions to achieve what we set out to do,” says Gershkow. “I’m proud of the range I’ve developed throughout my career and my ability to work across genres while bringing a distinct perspective to each project.”
It’s an approach that immediately connected with Underhill. “Perry’s visual language stopped me in my tracks the first time I saw his work” says Underhill co-founder Matt Seger. “I love that you can feel Perry’s background as a surf filmmaker in all of his work, especially in the refinement of the camera and talent direction in challenging, and unforgiving environments. To me that proves that he can handle anything that is thrown at him.”
For Gershkow, the connection goes beyond the work itself. “I chose Underhill because I was really inspired by their work, but also because I connected with them as a group,” says Gershkow. “They’re driven, ambitious and willing to do whatever they can to make sure I have the support and tools I need to bring my vision to life. Beyond the work, they’re just a great group of people to be around, and that made the decision to sign with them feel like a natural fit.”
