Unless you’re a Bowie, a Madonna or another one-named savant of the music industry, it’s very easy to become beholden to fans of your breakthrough work and find yourself churning out carbon copies.
Such is the dilemma addressed by Weezer, in typically humorous fashion, in the video and lyrics for latest track C.E.O., in which the band knowingly refers back to its Spike Jonze-helmed breakthrough, Undone – The Sweater Song.
In this iteration, directors Brendan Walter and Jasper Graham, shooting through TRESCO, bookend a bizarre recreation of the original video with scenes featuring Rob Riggle and Rob Huebel as executives pushing the band to repeat its former success.

Lyrically, the song continues the theme, with Rivers Cuomo lamenting the pressure of “cranking out another ’90s jam” and admitting that, while he wishes he could do something new, people “just want the classics”. Now the founder and C.E.O. of Weezer Enterprises, his job is to stop thinking like a “mad professor” and keep the rocket in the sky.
Never ones to disappoint on the cameo front – this is, after all, a band that has played with both The Muppets and The Fonz – the original line-up is soon replaced by stars including Michael Peña, Giovanni Ribisi, Tony Hawk, Dax Flame and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, while Rivers and co head outside for a spot of hacky sack.
