Mad Cow Films' creative studio Milk Machine has partnered with Scrumbles on their new campaign film, the latest iteration in an ongoing partnership between the creative studio and the fast-growing pet-food brand.

The film conceived, developed and produced by Milk Machine, and directed by Mad Cow Films’ Adam Johnson, is a feline take on the classic film noir genre, taking us into the mind of Smokey: a world-weary cat, stuck in the depths of yearning for his neighbour’s kitty, Luna. Beset by melancholy and his (just about tolerable) owners, Smokey’s life is grey… until he is fed his Scrumbles, that is.

This campaign continues Milk Machine’s focus on developing ideas from the ground up: from ideation and scripting through to full production.

Creative Director Francesco Loy Bell said: “We liked the idea of taking something completely everyday and treating it with a bit more drama than it might usually warrant. Cats already carry themselves like they’re starring in their own films, so we just leaned into that and gave it a slightly more cinematic lens.”

Having started their partnership in 2024, working with Scrumbles on their first ever TV commercial, this is the fifth film Milk Machine has created with the much-loved pet food brand. The film arrives on the tail (so to speak) of Scrumbles’ recent recognition by the Financial Times as one of Europe’s fastest-growing companies.

Speaking on the experience, director Johnson said: “We’ve all been there. The days when the world rests a little too heavy on the shoulders. However, a few days filming this delightful project put a right big smile on my face. Thank God for Scrumbles. I only wish I could eat it.”
