Dutch supermarktet chain, Albert Heijn, has gone for nostalgia this year with a fun reimagining of the original video of Wham!’s globally recognised yuletime tune that features a cameo from the band’s co-founder Andrew Ridgeley.
Most importantly it features a regular Albert Heijn mascot, the redoubtable romantic rodent who this year fears he’s gonna miss out on the family’s snowy holiday adventure.
Created by TBWA\Neboko and directed by Mattias Schut through HolyFools, in collaboration with Make, Studio63, AH Studio, the advert, Whamster, recreates memorable moments from the original video (below), including the famous dinner table scene.
Reflecting on his appearance in the spot, Ridgeley says: “I am so pleased to have been a part of this year’s Albert Heijn Christmas advert. It's an affectionate and clever tribute to Last Christmas, with a playful yet faithful recreation of the video. It's also extremely well-produced and a testament to the song’s place in the contemporary Christmas landscape.”
The director comments: "'Last Christmas', I had no idea we’d be working with the WHAMSTER for the next Albert Heijn commercial! It was great to bring to life an 80s-themed daydream of the much loved family hamster, plus permed hair, retro food styling, nostalgic camera work and a very casual cameo from Andrew Ridgeley."
