Anna van der Velde directs Overchord
Anna van der Velde directs a shape-shifting reality exploring power and authorship in Actress' music video for Overchord.
Anna van der Velde directed the music video for Overchord, the latest single from pioneering electronic artist Actress.
Released as the second single of the forthcoming album, Radical Frame, Overchord arrives alongside a film that mirrors the album’s exploration of identity and authorship. Built as a frame within a frame within a frame, the video continuously shifts the viewer’s perspective, questioning where power resides: within systems, within the artist, or within the act of creation itself.
Commissioned by Ninja Tune and produced by Stink’s Music & Special Projects department, the film is set inside a self-constructed prison where Actress becomes both captor and captive. As reality continually shape-shifts, the film explores the hierarchies that exist within creative practice.

For van der Velde, Overchord is an introspection on the structures that govern artistic expression and the tension between external power and internal agency. Rather than offering fixed answers, the film asks the question: is creativity something harnessed by systems of power, or is it the greatest form of power?
Releasing Overchord features alongside the announcement of Radical Frame, Actress’ upcoming album and latest evolution of his distinctive “inter-dimensional electronic composition.” Following his collaborative record Concréte Waves with Suzanne Ciani, the new project further expands his singular sonic language.
