Reporters Without Borders The First Speech

2024 is a massive year for democracy, with 80 countries set to hold presidential elections. So, this campaign by Innocean Berlin, for Reporters Without Borders Germany, is a timely reminder that freedom of the press is more important than ever. It’s chilling to hear the victory speeches of Putin [below], Erdoğan, and Maduro as they passionately promise to safeguard freedom, democracy and human rights… because we all know what happened next. Beautifully crafted, cinematic, and with a stark message at its heart: trust independent media, not the pretty words of politicians.

Greenpeace Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow

Not just one for Fleetwood Mac fans (the campaign soundtrack reworks the classic track), this is a long watch, but it’s worth every minute. A rowdy party spinning seriously out of control is a none-too-subtle metaphor for big corporations who are acting like there’s no tomorrow, and driving the climate crisis solely for their own profit. But, beyond the bleak subject matter, there’s a message of hope to young people who feel they’ve been shafted by older generations and handed a world in ruins: they still have the power to change it.

Thomas Heatherwick Humanise: UnLandmarks

If you feel like London’s skyline is getting increasingly bland, with identikit buildings popping up like mushrooms, each one uglier than the last, then you’re not alone. This clever campaign from Uncommon, for architecture firm Heatherwick calls out the creeping trend for soulless buildings (which, by the way, are more than just crap to look at, they’re actually proven to be harmful to mental health) by using AI to reimagine iconic landmarks in modernist styles. Buckingham Palace, Edinburgh Castle, the Tower of London, Royal Liver Building, the Palace of Westminster and Hovis Hill all get the bland treatment and the results are, frankly, dystopian. A brilliant use of AI for good.

Who Gives a Crap Winnie the Pooh: The Deforested Edition

From Noddy to The Twits, lots of classic childhood books are being rewritten for a politically correct era, but the latest one to be reimagined, A. A. Milne’s 1926 classic Winnie-the-Pooh, goes a bit further. The new edition, created by TBWA\Melbourne for toilet paper brand Who Gives a Crap, highlights the devastating effects of deforestation around the globe in a shockingly effective way - reducing the Hundred Acre Wood - where Pooh, Piglet, Tigger et al hang out - to a series of sad stumps. Not the bedtime story that we might want to read our children… but perhaps the one we should.
