Obsession proved that filmmaker Curry Barker is a master of the macabre, but how does such a mind deal with the horror of... running out of battery?
While the wider campaign has leaned into playfulness, Microsoft and Droga5 have done something much smarter for the brand's Halloween activation: giving the filmmaker the opportunity to create something truly compelling, with a cheeky product-demo challenge thrown into the process.
The result is Mama Bear, a tidy five-minute micro movie that concerns a house cleaner responding to a frantic phone call.
As chilling as the film is, Barker delighting again with the 'what's that in the corner?' flavour of nightmare fuel, the story behind it goes beyond the scares, with Microsoft revealing that the entire film was edited and finished on its Surface Laptop Ultra without the machine being plugged in.
Drawing in the talents of Corridor Digital for the VFX (with an accompanying 'making of' episode), as well as leaning on the director's previous YouTube pedigree, this smart slice of branded entertainment is both ingenious and energetic.
