There’s a little rule we’ve noticed in good ad-making: if you want a tale told well and full of charm, call in Mark Molloy.

Using his formidable skills as a master of short-form storytelling, the SMUGGLER director’s new Facebook film for Meta sees a young woman take on a host of paid tasks in order to secure a bit of vehicular freedom.

Created by Droga5, the joy of Summer Jobs is in its telling, with Molloy realising each of the montaged moments in such a relatable fashion that, by the end, you’re keen to hop into the truck and join the road trip.

The hero film is accompanied by three social spots, Joyride, Garage Band and Book Club, directed by SMUGGLER’s Rawtape, aka Rory Wood, which similarly explore how a seemingly simple search or interaction on Facebook can lead somewhere unexpected.

The campaign will also extend into a series of Marketplace vehicle drops, beginning with a truck inspired by the one in the film and packed with everything its new owner might need for the ultimate summer road trip.

“Our campaign reintroduces Facebook as the place where you come with something specific in mind, a car, a book club, a guitar, but find the community that helps turn it into something bigger and more meaningful,” say Droga5 Group Creative Directors Amy Werblin and Erika Kohnen.

“For the launch film, Summer Jobs, it felt really interesting to us to start with one of the most common searches on Facebook Marketplace, a used car, and bring to life how the story could build from there over the course of a summer, with that pursuit as the starting place.”
