If you think of Aussie cinematic spectacle, it's not going to take you long to start picturing George Miller and his Mad Max outback maniacs. But don't forget that this is the man who brought us Babe. And Happy Feet.
Now, what would happen if those worlds collide?
Taking the dusty motorcade influence and imbuing it with some childlike wonder, Akcelo's global launch film for the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 plays out like a toybox version of Miller's savage fantasy, replacing the Doof Warrior and Master Blaster with portable BBQs and oversized chickens.
Directed by Scott Otto Anderson through Photoplay Films, the film's real USP is in its visuals - the team at Masters & Savant and Motif Studios anchoring the VFX with delicious custom-built vehicles shot in-camera at a 1-to-10 scale.
“For this project, we looked carefully at what could best be achieved given the concept and its clear inspiration," comments Craig Hunter Parker, VFX Supervisor and Lead Compositor at Motif Studios. "Having worked on over 120 VFX shots for Mad Max: Fury Road, we approached this with the same mindset of solving problems creatively and cost-effectively.
"By building the vehicles as miniatures, we were able to spend more time crafting the key shots and integrating live-action extras and rugby players into each environment. Through scanning and building additional vehicles in 3D, including the mecha and the wallaby, we merged disciplines to achieve a result that feels ambitious but still grounded and fun.”
