On My Radar: Jamie Foord
Trim Editing Partner and editor Jamie Foord celebrates two very British films made decades apart, some beautiful Apple products, and being given the chance to be taken out of his comfort zone, as he reveals what's on his creative radar.
What’s the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen recently?
I really love the New York Times spots that use type, stills and moving footage. The most recent one I saw was directed by Camille Summers-Vali. It is a great journey through many different themes and beautifully conveys the depth of the NYT. Top stuff.

What website(s) do you use most regularly?
I lurk on dwell.com quite regularly in order to feed my inner architect and interior designer. I also like directorslibrary.com to see what interesting film things are being made. They curate the work quite nicely and keep the content focused on craft.
What’s the most recent piece of tech that you’ve bought?
We got really nice Apple Studio machines at the studio in LA that are really great, but the real stars are the Apple monitors, they are such beautiful objects.
What product could you not live without?
I’d find it hard to survive without my phone, I suppose, as it is the key to so much that happens in my life. But I would hope that there’s not really anything that I couldn’t live without if I really tried hard enough.
What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?
The Ballad of Wallace Island was great. Funny, a little bit sad, and very British.
What film do you think everyone should have seen?
Withnail and I is a great film. Copy and paste from previous answer: ‘Funny, a little bit sad and very British.’ It also has a great soundtrack and some cracking dialogue.
What’s your preferred social media platform?
I have a love/hate relationship with Instagram. I see it as a necessary tool to see work and culture, but I am as guilty as the next person in getting sucked into endless doom scrolling and then hating myself. I periodically delete the app from my phone, but I need to do better to keep it to a minimum.
What’s your favourite TV show?
I really loved the HBO series Deadwood. The dialogue is Shakespearean, the performances are next-level, and there’s some excellent swearing. It ended up getting cancelled and didn’t really have the chance to come to a logical conclusion, but it’s right up there with The Sopranos and The Wire for me.
What’s your favourite podcast?
I probably listen to the Guardian football (soccer) weekly podcast more than any other, but am also a big nerd for the Deakins' podcast. I could hear stories about Sicario and No Country for Old Men all day long.
What have you been most inspired by recently?
The challenge of being part of something new professionally has given me lots of inspiration. At Trim, I’m surrounded by new people who are doing really interesting things, and there are a lot of great ideas and energy. I’ve been moved out of my comfort zone, and that feels necessary to move forward.
If you could only listen to one music artist from now on, who would it be?
That’s a really hard one. I would definitely have The Smiths in the mix, Tribe Called Quest, Bowie, Outkast, Joy Division, Nirvana, The Velvet Underground, Rolling Stones… sorry I am just making a long list now. I guess I can’t narrow it down to one.
If there was one thing you could change about the advertising industry, what would it be?
I would move the needle back in the direction of the artists. In my experience, there’s an overwhelming shift away from craft and following through on a good idea in advertising, and I look longingly at the risks that have been taken in the past.
Who or what has most influenced your career?
There was a TV show in the UK in the early 2000s called Mirrorball that showcased music video directors, which opened up a whole new world for me. There were episodes on Gondry, Spike Jonze, Mike Mills and Jonathan Glazer and I taped and watched them over and over again. I loved movies, but these music videos seemed so much more achievable and gave me the belief there was a place for me in it.
What scares you the most?
Public restrooms, I have nightmares about them.
What makes you happiest?
Professionally, collaboration is the key to enjoying what I do. Personally, spending quality time with my family is it.
Tell us one thing about yourself that most people wouldn’t know.
I made a short doc some time ago about a UK DJ called Derek who went from being an accountant to a full-time roots and reggae DJ. I spent a good amount of time hearing stories and growing quite fond of Derek.
