This remarkable video is a fine example of the filmmaker's art of drawing you into a powerful, wordless character study, through masterful camerawork, mise-en-scène, editing and sound, plus, of course, an enthralling central performance.

Films.dance was launched by Jacob Jonas the Company, a global platform and creative studio for dance. Titled Do Butterflies Remember Being Caterpillars, this latest film from the platform sees Canadian b-boy Luca Patuelli deliver an intriguing story, directed by Caraz with fine cinematography from Derek Branscombe, that grips from the first frame.

Born with arthrogryposis, a rare muscle disorder that limits motion in his leg joints, Luca Patuelli has never let his condition slow him down. Discovering his passion for breakdancing at the age of 15, he’s become a force on the hip hop dance stage – his inspiring mantra is, ‘no excuses, no limits’.

Set to eerie music composed by Hologramme, the film was produced by Martine aimait les films and sees Patuelli relate the journey of a childlike man who dances his way through various strange scenarios as he appears to tussle with adulthood.

The bewitching choreography by Alessandro Giaquinto has him dancing with a wayward finger, a mysterious briefcase and a disappointing breakfast, all of which lead to a show of great strength and stillness, but who is the masked child in the corner? Fascinating.
