Singing along to your team’s anthem is a core part of the matchday experience, but up to one in 20 football fans who are Deaf or hard of hearing can feel left on the sidelines.
Acknowledging this and aiming to make the experience more inclusive, Danish brewer Carlsberg partnered with the British Deaf Association and Fold7 to launch Signs of Unity, which involved teaching Liverpool fans at Anfield stadium how to perform You’ll Never Walk Alone in British Sign Language (BSL).
At the heart of the initiative is a moving film directed by Charlie Watts, which captures the activation in action, bringing to life the emotional impact for Deaf and hard-of-hearing fans as they watch fellow supporters signing the anthem in unison.
